  • Community Cat Assistance Program

At FieldHaven Feline Center, we’ve earned a reputation as the place to turn for anything cat-related! Our Community Cat Assistance Team (CAT) is made up of caring staff and knowledgeable volunteers who are here to help with all kinds of cat questions — from behavior issues and rehoming personal cats to caring for community and feral cats.

We love helping people learn how to support cats in their homes and neighborhoods. Our team teaches and guides community members through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), providing hands-on training, step-by-step coaching, and even the equipment needed to get started.

Our goal is to make sure every person who contacts us gets the information, tools, and support they need to find the best solution for their situation. When someone needs to surrender a cat, we first look for alternatives to help them keep or rehome their pet. If that’s not possible, we’ll place them on our intake waiting list or connect them with another shelter that can help.

    Found Sick or Injured Cat

Take to a local vet or animal shelter for immediate medical care. Check if there is an emergency vet in the area that will take a Good Samaritan surrender.

    Found Healthy Cat or Kitten

Put it back where you found it. It most likely has an owner and was just enjoying a walk around the neighborhood! Contact your local shelter to find out how to file a found cat report.

If healthy, please shelter-in-place with this pet while doing the following to locate the owner

    1. Check for a microchip. Take to local vet, shelter, pet store, or FieldHaven to scan for a chip*. FieldHaven can scan the kitty: please call (916) 434-6022 or email info@fieldhaven.com to arrange a chip scan.
      • If you found a microchip, visit Pet Microchip Lookup, enter the chip number, and contact all companies where registration is listed.

    2. Use yard signs. Make a big sign for your front yard. Keep it simple: FOUND CAT, size, color, sex.

    3. Post on social media. Post animal picture and FOUND notice of local “lost and found pet” Facebook pages, Craigslist, Nextdoor, and any other city or neighborhood-specific social media group available.

    4. Fax information out. Go to PawBoost. You can then enter the info and photo. This information is immediately faxed and emailed to animal shelters, vet offices, rescue groups, etc. Many owners have been found this way!

    5. Use neighborhood signs. Print flyers. Post flyers on telephone poles or other neighborhood boards – Note: if a pet is missing, the owner is most likely walking or driving the neighborhood searching for them, so signage will still work.

    6. Make free online posts. Petco Lost Love, 24 Pet Connect, and PawBoost offer free services to help you reunite with your lost pet. PawBoost can help make free flyers.

  • Surrender/Rehome

  • We often receive a high volume of requests. We triage each one to best help those who need it the most first, so it may take 5-7 business days for us to respond.

Please make every effort to find your new pet a home on your own using the resources on our website. Have a plan in place for your pets if this is a last-minute request. Rehoming often takes weeks, and if you only have a matter of days, make a plan for your pet. Please do not abandon them; this is a crime.

FieldHaven does not often intake owner surrenders but if an intake is your only option, please be sure to note that in the comments. Resources will vry by location. Reminder: Your cat must be spayed or neutered and preferably up to date on vaccines and microchipped.

We stress that we are here to assist you in rehoming your cat so it's important for you to promote your cat on adoption sites, social media, and other avenues. We can provide you with lots of resources, support, and tools.

Your listing will remain active for at least 30 days on FieldHaven's website; social posts stay up indefinitely.

  • Have you reached out to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. to see if anyone can take your cat/s, even if temporarily, and/or help with networking them? NOTE: This means asking MORE than once!*
  • Have you posted your cat/s on social media, NextDoor, Adopt-a-Pet, or other sites that can help reach cat-loving people? Post in groups, on personal feeds, ask followers to share, etc. We have these sites linked on our website to easily guide you. NOTE: For social media and NextDoor, this means posting MORE than once!*
  • Have you reached out to other organizations? This may include leaving messages, sending emails, getting on a waiting list, if applicable, or getting help from their rehoming programs.*
  • If we could provide assistance or resources to help with your cat/s situation, would you consider keeping them?*
  • FieldHaven partners with organizations that operate on the same principles that we do. We often have opportunities for cats to be transferred to other shelters and we carefully match cats with each organization's adopter base.*
